bullet Rosa Gray DRINKWATER Mrs. died on 16 Dec 1952.
Thursday, December 18, 1952
Manteo, North Carolina, December 17 - Wife of ALPHEUS W. DRINKWATER, only woman in the history of North Carolina to hold the post of wreck commissioner, among the first to manage a telegraph office and long a leading figure in the religious, fraternal and civic life of Northeastern North Carolina, died in the Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, shortly before midnight Tuesday night, December 16, 1952, 12 hours after suffering the first of a series of cerebral hemorrhages. Coming as a bride to Manteo from her native Currituck County 47 years ago at the age of 20, she shortly was taught telegraphy by her husband, who was at that time in charge of communications for the United States Weather Bureau and when the Western Union established an office here, she was placed in charge of it, a post in which she continued until her death. She was appointed wreck commissioner, once a post of great importance, by Governor J.M. BROUGHTON and reappointed by Governor CHERRY. Her husband was appointed to succeed her by Governor SCOTT. Too shocked to remember clearly Wednesday, December 17, 1952, her bereaved husband was not too sure of his recollection, but she used to recall that it was 49 years ago this week when she first met her husband. He was on duty on the beach across Currituck Sound from her home on Long Point, having established a telegraph office there to keep President THEODORE ROOSEVELT informed as to progress in the salvage of the first submarine, the Moccasin. It was from there that he sent out 49 years ago Wednesday, December 17, 1952 the message that informed a not particularly interested world that the Wrights had flown an airplane from Kill Devil Hill. After 1903, she came to Manteo and taught for a year in the schools of the town and the following summer, she was married at her home in Currituck. A home was built that in time came to be the center of the community's celebrated hospitality. She was an ardent gardener, and the grounds around her house have long been a show place on Roanoke Island. Always, she had time, for her family, her husband and his friends, her telegraph office, her flowers, her church and the fraternal organizations in which she was always active. She was one of the charter members of the Roanoke Island Garden Club, the Manteo Music Club, the Home Demonstration Club, the Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star. She was also active in the work of Mt Olivet Methodist Church, from which she will be buried Thursday, December 18, 1952 at 2:00 pm. The body will lie in state two hours before the service. Surviving beside her husband are 2 daughters, Mrs. DOROTHY DRINKWATER of Manteo and Mrs. JOHN L. BOOTH of Norfolk and 3 grandsons, the oldest of which grew up as her own child. Also surviving are her stepmother, Mrs. ANNIE L. GRAY of Norfolk and 2 half sisters, Mrs. ETHEL GRAY LEWIS and Mrs. MARIAN GRAY COLEMAN, both of Norfolk and a half brother, C.K. GRAY of Norfolk.

bullet Henry W. DUCACHET Reverend
Friday, December 29, 1865
It will be interesting to many of our numerous readers to whom the deceased was so well known, to learn some of the particulars connected with his unexpected death. It seems that after family evening prayer, he retired, as was his norm, to his study. At an early hour in the morning, his wife discovered that he had not been to bed during the night. His study was visited where the gas was found burning and the door locked, the shutters being open. Entrance was made through a window and the lifeless body of the doctor found lying upon the floor. Physicians were summoned, but they could not render no assistance. He was born in the city of Charleston, SC in 1797 and at 10 years of age, went to Philadelphia and received his early education at the school at Airy. At 17, he went to New York and commenced the study of medicine under Dr. HOSACK, graduating in four years with distinction. The doctor was a man of fine manners and cultivated mind and an able theologian and an orator of more than ordinary cloquence. His discourses were always attractive. He was a man of literary taste and wrote several papers for the Medical Repository and a translation of the Prognostic of Hippocrates, besides having edited a volume on The Theory and Practice of Medicine, by Dr. HOSACK, to whom he dedicated the volume. He subsequently entered upon the study of theology and at the age of about 28, was ordained by Bishop GRISWOLD, and took charge of a parish in Salem, Mass, which he afterwards relinquished for Christ Church in this city. Here he remained till about the year 1833/1834. He relinquished his charge here and in 1834 was instituted Rector of St Stephen's Church by Bishop WHITE. He held his cure up to the time of his death and was greatly esteemed and beloved by his parishioners. His only son, who was a schoolmate of this writer and a surgeon in the United States Army, died in Washington very recently and it is surmised that this circumstance had much to do with the sudden death of the father. He was a man, in earlier years, of fine personal appearance and what was recognized as a handsome man. Later, he became somewhat corpulent, which, perhaps, induced apoplexy, of which he no doubt died. We have embodied facts from Philadelphia press, with those personally know to us, in making up the foregoing statement, which will prove of interest to his large circle of friends and acquaintances in this city.
