CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN ACQUITTED AS INSANE IN KILLING OF HIS BOSS Published: 11/26/91 in LOCAL section, page D4 Source: By Matthew Bowers, Staff writer Story sample: A construction foreman was acquitted Monday by reason of insanity of murdering his boss, who, the foreman fantasized, was plotting to kill him. A Circuit Court judge concluded that the defendant, John Thomas Midgette, murdered his boss, Michael B. Jacobs, by shooting him in the back of the head, but also that Midgette was insane at the time of the killing. A state psychologist said Midgette suffered from ``delusional paranoid disorder'' and, more specifically, a persecution paranoia.

Friday, February 21, 1896 (See the obit of SAMUEL JARNER, same date) Scotland Neck, NC, February 20 (Special) - The coroner's jury in a body with Dr. J.R. POPE, visited the remains of young JAMES yesterday (Wednesday, February 18, 1896), who died the day before (Tuesday, February 17, 1896) and examined his head. They took the testimony of the witnesses who had testified before Mayor PERRY on the warrant Monday (February 16, 1896). Dr. J.R. POPE did not testify before Mayor PERRY. His testimony before the Coroner yesterday (Wednesday, February 18, 1896) was that the blow killed JAMES and that it would have killed almost any man. One other witness was examined - F.L. BELL. He testified that JAMES was at his house Sunday night, February 15, 1896 and he asked JAMES if he was going to church and JAMES said he was afraid to, for ROBT MOORE had said that if he saw him on the streets he would have to whip him or kill him. The verdict of the jury was that JAMES came to his death by a blow with a deadly weapon, a dye paddle, in the hands of ROBERT MOORE. Soon after the body was examined by the coroner and the jury it was taken to the home of the father, about 7 miles in the country for interment. The Criminal Court for this county next week will have quite a number of cases. The county jail is well filled. The Ladies Aid Society of the Baptist Church held a festival this week and raised $45.00. Alonzo

Wilson JAMES
Tuesday, October 23, 1906 He was found dead in a room of the old James residence, 62 Fenchurch Street Sunday, October 21, 1906 and was buried Monday afternoon, October 22, 1906. He had been missing since the 11th of October, 1906 and it is supposed that his death, which was due to accidental asphyxiation, occurred on that date. When found, the body was sitting in a chair beside a desk in a room which he had used as office and study for many years. He was a very wealthy man. His estate being estimated to be between $250,000 and $400,00. He lived a life of quiet leisure, devoting his time mainly to literature and historical study. He was a member of the Virginia Club, the Westmoreland Club, of Richmond and clubs in Baltimore and other cities. Up to about 12 years ago, he lived in the house where his death occurred. The old colonial mansion was formerly the Tunstall Home and was in the then aristocratic section of Norfolk. It was purchased about the time of the Civil War by JOHN JAMES, father of the deceased and a prominent merchant of this city. JOHN JAMES dropped dead in the same room where his son was found dead. After the death of JOHN JAMES, EDWARD JAMES and 2 of his sisters lived in the house. The Misses JAMES were types of southern womanhood, though they in no way entered into the social life. On the contrary, their exclusiveness was noticeable. They always went out together, attired in the quaint black silk gowns of the period. When one of them died, the other continued to reside with her brother, and maintained the old house in its former air of seclusion. One year, the surviving sister went on a visit to Baltimore and died there. Since that time, the house has not been occupied save as a study by Mr. JAMES. While few people entered it in previous years, after the death of Miss JAMES, practically no one crossed its threshold except EDWARD JAMES. JOE WRIGHT and his wife, ARA, have lived in the kitchen during all these years and JOE WRIGHT told a Virginian-Pilot reporter, he had only been in the house three times. His wife would clean Mr. JAMES study, but the other rooms have been allowed to remain exactly as they were when the last Miss JAMES left them. He did his writing in the downstairs room, to the left of the entrance. At times, when callers would come on business, he conversed with them at the front door. When he entered the house, he would lock himself in. If he were going away on a visit to other cities, as he frequently did, he would summon JOE WRIGHT to the door and bring his satchel there for the Negro to carry to the car. And, after passing so much of his time alone in the old house, he died there alone. The periods he lived in Norfolk, he lived at 467 Duke Street, the home of the GRANBERRY Family, his relatives. Being in and out of the city frequently, his absence since October 11th was not noticed by his friends. ARA WRIGHT, the serving woman, remarked to her husband on the 12th that Mr. JAMES had gone away without telling her where he was going so that she might have his mail forwarded to him, as was his custom. That was all. Several days passed an offensive odor became noticeable about the house. JOE WRIGHT and his wife thought some rat or other animal died in the basement or yard. A search of the yard failed to reveal anything and the man hesitated entering the basement on account of its owner's objections to anyone going in the house. Sunday morning, October 18, 1906 however, he determined to do so. His visit located the source of the odor in his office. He put a ladder beneath the front window of the room and broke a slat in the blind. A horrible sight met his gaze and he hurried around to UNDERHILL's pharmacy, Church and Cove Streets, to notify Mr. UNDERHILL of the case. The druggist, who had been a life long friend of Mr. JAMES informed the police. Patrolman BRENNAN was sent around to the house. He forced an entrance. The dead body was seated in a chair. A few feet away from it, was a gas stove and a slowly leaking jet told the cause of death. On a desk beside the body was the manuscript of a partly completed history of Norfolk and Norfolk County. It is thought that he was engaged in writing and was gradually suffocated at his desk. He was born in this city in 1848 and graduated from Roanoke College. His early life was passed in business with the firm of James, Smith & Bro. and with his father. Upon the death of his father, JOHN JAMES, he retired from active business and took up literature, history and archaeology. In the last named study he achieved a wide reputation. For many years, and up to his death, he had edited and published the Lower Norfolk County, Virginia Antiquary. This was his pet hobby. The magazine was never for sale, but was circulated among libraries and people who would appreciate its great value. Only recently, upon request, he presented the New York Library with a handsomely bound file of the publication. He was an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity, this unusual honor having been conferred upon him by the chapter at William and Mary College on account of his valuable works in literature and history. For many years, he had been a director of the Norfolk Public Library and in respect to his memory, that institution was closed Monday, October 22, 1906. The funeral Monday afternoon, October 22, 1906 was conducted from the apartments of H.D. Oliver, the Rev ROBERT GATEWOOD officiating at the ceremonies in Cedar Grove Cemetery, where the interment occurred. The body was borne by 8 Negroes and the honorary pallbearers were: H.B. BAGNALL, Colonel WM. LAMB, LYON G. TYLER of Williamsburg, W.H. SARGEANT SR, W.W. VICAR, C.F. UNDERHILL, Judge W.H. BURROUGHS, Dr. R.B. KENNON, R.H. BAKER SR, F.H. ROBINSON, Major C.W. GRANDY, Judge J.M. KEELING, JOHN N. VAUGHAN, JOHN B. JENKINS, Captain B.P. LOYALL and ROBERT M. HUGHES. After the finding of the body Sunday, October 18, 1906, a coroner's inquest was held, and the following verdict was rendered: "We, the jury, find that the said EDWARD JAMES, came to his death by accidentally being asphyxiated at No 62 Fenchurch Street." Thursday, October 25, 1906 At least 3/4's of his estate goes to the University of Virginia, conditionally. He was of Norfolk. The conditions are that for 15 years, ½ of the income of the estate left to the university be paid to the Confederate Home, near Richmond and that monthly legacies amounting to $65 per month be paid during the lifetime of the beneficiaries. In round figures, about $40,000 of the estate is divided into gifts ranging from $20,000 left to Miss MARY ARCHER HOOPER of Farmville, down to $500 bond gifts to others and distributed among relatives and close personal friends in Norfolk, Richmond and Baltimore. The remainder of the estate, probably $150,000 goes to the university. The will was probated Wednesday afternoon, October 24, 1906 in the corporation court before Judge ALAN R. HANCKEL. The Bank of Savings and Trust of Norfolk, named in the will as executor, qualified. The appraisers named by the court were: Colonel WALTER H. TAYLOR, A.B. SCHWARSKOP, M.T. COOKE, F.J. ROBINSON and J.U. GOODE. The statement was made to the court that the valuation of the estate was problematic, although estimated at about $200,000. It was pointed out that examination might vary this amount by $50,000 one way or the other. The appraisers will immediately examine the estate and report an inventory to the court. He wrote his own will. The document is brief and to the point. It's provisions are clear and distinct. It was executed nearly 6 years ago. The document is as follows: "In the name of God. Amen. I, EDWARD WILSON JAMES, of Norfolk, Virginia, son of the late JOHN JAMES of Norfolk and MARY MOSELEY HUNTER, his wife, do on this 31st day of January, in the year of 1900, make this, my last will and testament.
