He was a World War 2 veteran and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for service to his country. He was a 1949 graduate of Cornell University. He came to Virginia in 1950 and worked with the Virginia Department of Agriculture for seven years before operating his own business, Campsite Catering Service, for 28 years. He retired in 1986. He was a member of Congregation Beth Ahabah. He is survived by his wife, GERALDINE R. Age 76, a former owner of the old Norfolk Landmark and part owner of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot and the Baltimore Sun papers, died Tuesday night, January 13, 1953 at his home in suburban Chevy Chase, Maryland. His death was attributed to a heart attack. He was at one time, general manager of the Sun and a grandson of ARUNAH S. ABELL, founder of the newspaper, began working for the Sun in 1894 and remained until 1910. In June 1910, he came to Norfolk and purchased the old Norfolk Landmark from S.S. NOTTINGHAM, whom he retained as secretary and treasurer. On August 1, 1910, he published the first Monday morning newspaper in Norfolk. On January 1, 1912, the Landmark merged with the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot under the control of the Virginian-Pilot officers and staff. In the mid-1920's, he went to Washington, where he became business manager of the Washington Post. Later he returned to Norfolk and was in the business office of the Virginian-Pilot for several years before retiring to his Chevy Chase home. He became a stockholder in Norfolk Newspapers Inc., when the Ledger-Dispatch and the Virginian-Pilot merged on January 1, 1933. In recent years, his stock in the Norfolk Newspapers Inc. has been represented by his son, WILLIAM S. ABELL. He also had been connected with the new defunct Philadelphia Public Ledger. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. MARGARET ABELL and 5 children, GEORGE W. ABELL of Paris, FRANCIS ABELL of Riderwood, Maryland, WILLIAM S. ABELL of Chevy Chase, Mrs. ELIZABETH REBER of Baltimore, Maryland and Miss MARGARET JANE ABELL of Washington.
