SKYLINE -- A 63-year-old man was found dead in the driveway of a Los Reyes Drive house early yesterday, police said. San Diego police homicide detectives said the death appeared to be suspicious. An autopsy was planned. Homicide Lt. Jim Duncan said the man, who was identified as James Midyette, had head injuries that may have contributed to his death.
Police said Midyette was involved in a fight Wednesday night and locked out of the house. He was found in the driveway about 5:50 a.m. Family members then called 911. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Midyette dead.

ASHLAND -- James Webb Midyette Jr., 75, died Jan. 17, 2001. Mr. Midyette was born on July 28, 1925, to James Webb and Eula Rollins Midyette in Fredericksburg, Va. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree, after serving in the European and Pacific theatres with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Midyette retired as director of administration of the Virginia State Department of Agriculture in 1985 where his career spanned four decades. He served in many professional associations and was a president of the American Seed Control Officials. He was a member and Fellow in the Virginia Academy of Science, serving on the committee that created the Science Museum of Virginia. He was past commander of American Legion Post 206; past president of the Ashland Kiwanis Club and lieutenant governor of the Capitol District. Mr. Midyette was secretary of the Ashland War Memorial Association; past president of the Independence Ruritan Club; a member of the Central Virginia Men's Garden Club; and a charter member of the Hanover Country Club. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and at Ashland Hanover Visitor's Center. He was an active member of the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and had served on the board of trustees and as superintendent of Sunday School. Mr. Midyette is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lucille Pope Midyette; daughter, Anne Reid Midyette of Virginia Beach; sons, James Webb Midyette III and wife, Mary Dinardo Midyette, of Chesapeake, John Pope Midyette and wife, Donna Shields Midyette, of Hanover; four grandchildren, Jamie, Lauren, Jackson and Michael Midyette; two sisters, Margaret M. Leinbach of Urbanna and Nancy M. Hypes of Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends at Reid Funeral Home today from 4 to 7 p.m. A service will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Ashland at noon Saturday with burial at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Duncan Memorial Church, P.O. Box 247, Ashland, VA 23005.
