NINE FROM NORFOLK AREA LOSE LIVES ON HIGHWAYS. 2 WOMEN PEDESTRIANS STRUCK DOWN BY SPEEDING CARS; FIVE SAILOR VICTIMS OF CRASH IDENTIFIED.
Two women pedestrians were killed by speeding cars in Great Norfolk Saturday, December 13, 1952. Their deaths brought to nine the number of persons from Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk who died in automobile accidents within a 24 hour period. The tragic 24 hours began Friday afternoon, December 12, 1952 when a Suffolk man died in a Little Creek Amphibious Base accident and ended Saturday night, December 13, 1952 when an East Ocean View woman was struck down by a hit and run driver. Five of the victims were Norfolk based sailors headed for a weekend liberty. The dead are: Mrs. CLYDE MIDGETT, age 56, of 14th Street, extended, East Ocean View; RICHARD JONES, negro, age 52 of 152 Culloden Street, Suffolk; Mrs. HATTIE DAVIS, negro, age 46, of 7556 Diven Street. She was the 15th traffic fatality in Norfolk this year; LLOYD WINGATE MINTON Senior, age 49 of 1928 Glasgow Street, Portsmouth. The sailors who's stations were not definitely known were: JOHN EDGAR FALTER, age 20; DONALD L ESTER BARLIPP, age 20; CHARLES LEROY BAKER, age unknown; HARRY MATHIAS BENZINGER, age 19, all of whom were believed to be from Baltimore and THOMAS ALVIN MARTELL, age 19, address unknown, but thought to be from Pennsylvania. The last of the fatal accidents was the one that took the life of Mrs. CLYDE MIDGETT at 5:25 pm, only seconds after she stepped from a beauty parlor at East Ocean View Avenue and Sixth Street, where she had her hair dressed. The car, reported to be a 1952 Mercury, was headed east. It knocked Mrs. MIDGETT an estimated 50 feet and tore her shoes from her feet. She died almost instantly. The body was identified by her brother, A.V. STROUD, of 140 15th Street, who was called to the scene. A beauty operator who had just worked on the victim's hair said she was walking to the opposite side of East Ocean View Avenue to be met by her sister, Mrs. JOHN HINNANT of 137 East 15th Street. Princess Anne County Policeman E.W. NOSAY said he broadcast an alarm for the driver. He said he also was seeking the driver of a station wagon seen to give chase to the death car. The station wagon driver, NOSAY said, might be able more fully to describe the car. Mrs. MIDGETT was a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina and a daughter of the late CHARLES A. and Mrs. VANNIE JONES STROUD. She was a resident of this area for 35 years and at the time of death, an inspector for the Bemis Bag Company. She was the widow of GROVER M. MIDGETT. Surviving her are 3 sons, HENRY R. MIDGETT of Charleston, South Carolina, JAMES L. and GROVER M. MIDGETT JR, both of Norfolk; 3 sisters, Mrs. MINNIE WARD of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Mrs. NELLIE BURGESS and Mrs. JOHN W. HINNANT, both of Norfolk; 3 brothers, CHRISTOPHER C. and C. HERMAN STROUD, both of Goldsboro and ARCHER V. STROUD of Norfolk and 8 grandchildren. The body was taken to the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements. Funeral services will be conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Tuesday, December 16, 1952 at 11:00 am by Rev PAUL G. WILEY, pastor of the Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Plymouth, North Carolina. Pallbearers: J.R. ODOM, LARRY O'BRIEN, B.K. WARD, D.W. HARDISON, J.W. HINNANT Junior and FELIX OWENS.
