Fall Kills Welder, 2nd Hurt
VIRGINIA BEACH - A welder was killed and another was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when they fell five stories down a stairway shaft they were working on at a resort strip condominium. Sgt. JOE CURRAN said a section of the Oceans Condominium stairway shifted and the pair plummeted 50 feet to a concrete floor at the bottom of the shaft. The injured man's fall was cushioned because he landed on top of his partner, the investigator said. The dead man was identified as ROBERT LEE MIDGETTE, 42, of the 3500 block of Virginius Drive. He was pronounced dead at the job site at Atlantic Avenue and 40th Street. His partner, TRUSSY ROGERS of the 2200 block of Pleasure House Road, suffered two broken ribs, a fractured right elbow, and fractured shoulder blades. He was in undetermined condition late Tuesday in the Intensive Care Unit of General Hospital of Virginia Beach. The accident happened about 3:30pm at the
21-story building.
