Samuel Johnson Midyette, 79, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. A native of Bayboro, N.C., he was a Peninsula resident since 1946. Mr. Midyette worked as an insulator for the Newport News Shipbuilding from 1948 to 1965, then for the Pal Corporation in Richmond, Va., and also a former employee of Waco, Inc. and Brown and Root. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Midyette-Holden. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Macie B. Midyette; two daughters, Shirley M. Ray and her husband, Danny B., of Yorktown, Patricia M. Raterink and her husband, Doyle K., of Ionia, Mo.; sister-in-law, Faye Martin and her husband, Hart Jr. of Poquoson; four grandchildren, Tricia Carol Ray, Jason Paul Ray, Deacon K. Raterink and Elizabeth Marie Raterink; a great-grandson, Austin "A.J." Ray. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the home of Shirley Ray, 100 Tabb Lakes Drive, Yorktown, Va. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, in Arlington National Cemetery. Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Waves, Mrs. Midgett was a homemaker, attended Fairhaven United Methodist Church and was a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 165. She was the daughter of Cora Manley and Ignatius Scarborough Midgett and the widow of Alston William Midgett.
Mrs. Midgett is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anna G. and Charles Pendleton of Elizabeth City; three sons and daughters-in- law, William Avner Midgett Sr. and Sylvia Midgett, Leland R. and Alpean Midgett, and Carroll H. Midgett Sr. and Donna Midgett, all of Waves; a sister, Irma Austin of Hatteras, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two step- grandchildren. She was also predeceased by four sisters, Anna Midgett, Beuna Ballance, Camille Midgett and Matilda Etheridge; and a brother, Dorland Midgett. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Fairhaven United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bryan Shaw. Burial will follow in the Midgett Family Cemetery, Waves. The body was placed in the church Saturday afternoon, where the family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. At other times, the family will receive at the home of her son, Carroll Midgett. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements.
