CHESAPEAKE -- William Oliver Midgett, 86, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in a Virginia Beach nursing facility. Mr. Midgett was born in Dare County, N.C., to the late William and Laura Vandetta Midgett. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Mr. Midgett retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and went to work in the Norfolk shipyards. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva P. Midgett. Mr. Midgett is survived by four sisters, Alethia Rood of Virginia Beach, Alzira Sitherwood and Laura Miller, both of Chesapeake, and Vandetta Gray of Buxton, N.C.; two brothers, Landry Midgett of Ocean View and George Midgett of Manteo, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Great Bridge Baptist Church by Pastor Charles L. Moseley. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Friends are welcome to visit the funeral home today.
