He was a native of Montrose, La., and retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 years service and also from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a planner and estimator. Mr. Smith was a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife, Freda N. Smith; a daughter, Susan Gaddy of Ladson, SC; 2 sons, William R. Smith, Stephen N. Smith, both of Portsmouth; 4 sisters, Juanita S. Price and Tommie Jean Allgood, both of Meriden, Miss; Joan S. Toler of Mineral Wells, Texas and Peggy S. King of Jackson, Miss; 6 grandchildren: Kimberly, Karen, Kasey, Eric, Ben and Chad and 4 great grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 1:00 pm Monday in Fairview Heights Baptist Church by Dr Ted Burton. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd, Chapel, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society.

He was born January 19, 1923 in Richmond, VA and was reared in the mountains of West Virginia and Western North Carolina. A graduate of Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary, he served Presbyterian churches in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina from 1947 until his retirement in 1978. At that time he and his wife turned their hobby of hand bookbinding into a successful cottage industry which continued for 15 years. He was always active and involved member of the community in which he lived. He is survived by his wife, Helen Haynes Smith of Highland Farms Retirement Community, Black Mountain; his daughter, Nancy Smith Midgette, chair of the Department of History of Elon College, North Carolina; his son, David Hayes Smith, minister of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi; and his two sisters, Marion Smith Watson and Anne Smith McCuiston.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Twine Memorial Holy Temple, Portsmouth, by Pastor Duane McNair.
