Sunday, December 20, 1953 Ahoskie, North Carolina, December 19 - Age 53, died at Roanoke Chowan Hospital here Friday, December 18, 1953 at 8:30 pm from a heart attack. He was ill only two hours. Funeral services will be conducted at the Ahoskie Methodist Church Sunday, December 20, 1953 at 2:30 pm by the pastor, Rev E.G. PURCELL Junior and burial will be in the family mausoleum in Ahoskie Cemetery. He was born in Creswell, NC January 12, 1900, son of the late HENRY SEATON BASNIGHT and MAY PHELPS BASNIGHT. His parents moved to Harrellsville in Hertford County early in this century moving to Ahoskie in 1915. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. MYRA BENTON BASNIGHT; 2 children, RALPH LEIGH BASNIGHT and MARTHA HOPE BASNIGHT of Ahoskie; 2 sisters, Mrs. LUISE BASNIGHT LYON of Franklin, VA and Miss SARAH ETHEL BASNIGHT of Suffolk, VA and twin grandsons. Like his father, he was one of the leaders in the growth and development of Ahoskie. He was an extensive landowner and farmer. He was chairman of the board of the W.H. Basnight and Company Wholesalers, one of the largest in Eastern North Carolina. He was a member of the Board of County Commissioners and had served on the Ahoskie Town Council a number of years. In the past, he had operated tobacco warehouses here. He was one of the prime movers in the building of Roanoke-Chowan Hospital by public subscription in 1944 and 1945. He had served as its president since its inception and had been re-elected for another year at the annual meeting of the board last week. He was treasurer of the Roanoke-Chowan Broadcasting Company, owners of Radio Station WRCS, which he helped to build several years ago. For the past several months, he had served on a finance committee helping in the sale in stock for the location in Ahoskie of a needle industry. He also had been one of the leaders of a drive to locate in Ahoskie a second bank, the Planters National Bank and Trust Company of Rock Mount, which has its bank building under construction here. He was a member of the Ahoskie Methodist Church and had served continuously in various official church positions most of his life and he was a member of the Ahoskie Masonic Lodge and of the Sudan Temple Shriners of New Bern.
