Sunday, January 18, 1953 Age 91, resident of Petersburg since 1911, died in a Petersburg hospital Saturday afternoon, January 17, 1953. He was the son of the late BERRYMAN FRANKLIN BELL and STELLA RAWLS BELL. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. RUFUS E. JOHNSON of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a son, Dr. BENJAMIN R. BELL of Portsmouth; 2 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was a native of Ivor, where he lived until 1886. He attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1877/1878 and was graduated from the Bryant-Stratton Business College, Baltimore, in 1879. In 1886, he moved to Wakefield, where he entered the merchandise and peanut business with CHARLES W. NICHOLSON as partner. In 1889, he went in the lumber business with R.W. LYNCH. After the death of LYNCH, he formed a partnership with J.A. RICHARDSON, which continued until 1901 when he became associated with the Bain Peanut Company as secretary-treasurer. In 1911, he moved to Petersburg and was associated with the Dixie Peanut Company. He was commissioned by Governor FITZHUGH LEE in 1888 as Captain of the Sussex County Virginia Light Infantry. He served as superintendent of schools in Sussex County from 1903 to 1909. Funeral services will be conducted at the J.T. Morris and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg, Monday, January 19, 1953 at 3:30 pm.
