BRIGGS Norfolk Virginian, Saturday, January 20, 1866
FOUL MURDER IN SURRY COUNTY. About a week ago, there was a most foul murder committed in Surry County. A Freed woman, it seems, was possessed of a considerable sum of money, which, it is rumored, excited the covetousness of her brother, OLAN BRIGGS, who had demanded it of her. She, it appears, had been missing for some days and after diligent search, her mutilated body was discovered in a marl pit, her head horribly mashed, as if with an axe. Both of her hands were tied and a stone was fastened to her neck. It is said that the circumstances of the case pointed to her brother as the murderer, but upon the investigation of the affair by the Freedman's Bureau, no sufficient evidence, as we presume, having been developed, the case was dismissed. Saturday, January 20, 1866 MURDER: It is rumored in Portsmouth that the murder of a free woman was committed in that city on Monday night, January 15, 1866. We have been unable to learn the particulars. Addie
