SUFFOLK -- Ethel Savage Byrd, 98, a native of Nansemond County, Suffolk, died Dec. 25, 1999, at Beverly Manor of Portsmouth. She was the widow of Joseph Mallie Byrd Sr. and daughter of the late Thomas Upton Savage and Mary Ann ``Mollie'' Benton Savage. She was a devout Christian, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, homemaker and a lifelong active member of Bethlehem Christian Church UCC, Holland Road. She was a member and Sunday school teacher of the Ladies Star Class for 60 years. She was a charter member and officer of the W.W. Staley Missionary Circle, a pianist and charter member of the Bethlehem Fellowship Club. She was a choir member and leader, and was active for many years in the youth ministry of the church. She is survived by two sons, Joseph M. Byrd Jr. and his wife, Louise, of Roxboro, N.C., and Robert L. Byrd and his wife, Mary, of Suffolk; five daughters, Evelyn Johnson Hardy, Mary B. Hedgebeth, Jean B. Powell and her husband, William, Dot B. Powell and Joyce B. Bracey and her husband, Ben, all of Suffolk; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Bethlehem Christian Church UCC Cemetery, Holland Road, by the Rev. Tommy P. Reynolds. Friends may join the family after the service at Bethlehem Christian Church in the Fellowship Hall, and other times at the residence of Jean and William Powell, 1328 Murphy's Mill Road, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Bethlehem Church Building Fund. Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Three men in federal uniform entered his house on pretense of wishing to warm themselves and demanded his money. He resisted, when all the three fired upon him. He died instantly, falling into the arms of his wife.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss MAMIE BYRUM; a half brother, J.H. BYRUM of Tyner; 2 half sisters, Mrs. W.O. JORDAN and Mrs. GEORGE BOYCE, both of Norfolk. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 16, 1953 at 2:00 pm in the Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The pastor, the Rev RALPH KNIGHT, will officiate, assisted by the Rev J.T. BYRUM of Belhaven, a former pastor. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

A prominent citizen of this county and well known all over the country as a fox hunter and breeder of crack hounds and horses, was literally shot to pieces Saturday night, December 15, 1906 by JAMES STROTHER and PHILIP STROTHER, who live at "Rotherwood", three miles from this place. He secured a marriage license Saturday morning, December 15, 1906 and was married to Miss VIOLA STROTHER, daughter of the late Colonel JOHN R. STROTHER and sister of the two young men who later killed him. After the wedding, he attempted to leave the Strother's home and one of the brothers of the bride objected. He later climbed to the roof and endeavored to escape. He was seen by JAMES and PHILIP STROTHER, who opened fire on him with pistols and shot him to ribbons. He fell to the ground and died almost instantly. The incidents surrounding the killing are of sensational character and the affair has aroused the greatest excitement throughout the county.

Newport News, Virginia, January 24 - A 38 year old Newport News fireman, complaining of chest pains while fighting an attic blaze in a two story frame structure, died almost an hour after being taken to a hospital, Saturday, January 24, 1953. The victim was the father of two, a former shipfitter and member of the department since 1945. He was a native of Swain County, North Carolina. Damage to the structure was confined to the attic and attributed to careless smoking. ABE, after directing hose water from the outside, entered the structure, but soon returned and complained, "I don't feel good." He was taken immediately to a hospital, treated, but failed to respond to revival efforts and died within 40 minutes after admittance.

Wife of GEORGE E. CADE, died Sunday, June 30, 1946 in Miami, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at the Ewell & Williamson Funeral Home Thursday, July 4, 1946 at 2:30 pm by the Rev HENRY W. TIFFANY, D.D., pastor of the Park Place Baptist Church. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late JOHN R. and NANCY WHITLOCK ALLEN. She was in the 75th year of her age.
