He visited here a short time ago and then went to Florida. While it was known he was ill, there was no expectations of death. COSTON, U.S.M.C., a resident of Portsmouth for many years, is dead in Pensacola, Florida. Her death followed that of her son, by exactly three weeks. CHARLES M. COSTON died in Pensacola. She has succumbed to apoplexy. In Portsmouth, she made many friends during her husband's tour of duty at the Marine Barracks in the Navy Yard. She was well known in the Berkeley Ward. She leaves 4 children, JAMES W. NICHOLSON, Mrs. L.C. HALL and Miss ELLA COSTON of Portsmouth and HARRY W. COSTON of Newport News. JAMES and ELLA, her children, were with her when she died, having gone to Pensacola at the time of their brother's death. Mrs. L.C. HALL has left Portsmouth to attend the funeral.

HARRISONBURG -- Clarence E. Cougill, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Camelot Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 13, 1910, in Stephens City, Va., a son of the late Clarence Edward and Rosa Belle White Cougill Sr. He lived in Harrisonburg for the past 48 years. He attended the Shenandoah Valley Academy in Winchester, and graduated from Panama City High School in Panama City, Fla. He went to Washington, D.C., where he attended Georgetown University and George Washington University, studying commercial law while working in the U.S. Post Office. He then joined the Navy during World War II, remaining in the Postal Service. After completing his services with the U.S. Navy, he received an assignment as postal clerk on the first mail bus to go from town to town: Washington, D.C., to Harrisonburg. He served as postmaster at Penn Laird from 1959 to 1974. Following his retirement, Mr. Cougill worked as a salesman for Horsley and Constable Realtors. He was a member of the board of directors and served as secretary at Lakeview Golf Course for 31 years. He was an honorary member of Cross Keys Ruritan Club and served as zone governor. He also was a former member of the Isaak Walton League and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Mr. Cougill had been a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Brotherhood Bible Class since 1951. On Feb. 14, 1947, he married Eva Pauline Dyke, who survives him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Dr. Susan C. Torma and her husband, Jim D. Torma, of Virginia Beach, John P. Cougill and his wife, Alison D. Cougill, of Richmond, and Nancy C. Fenton and her husband, Farley L. Fenton, of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren, Alexandra J. Long, Whitney P. Long, Chandler C. Cougill and Cameron E. Cougill; a sister, Ellen C. Kennedy of Upperville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Asbury United Methodist Church by the Revs. L. Douglas Hill, E. Anne Hough and Jerry John. Burial will be earlier that day in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.
